Bradford Street Bed & Breakfast is located in Charleston’s East End Historic District - about half way between the West Virginia Capitol Complex and downtown Charleston. Built in 1889, this Queen Anne style mansion is two blocks east of the city’s original settlement, though it remained outside Charleston proper until the city began to grow in the direction of the newly-constructed capitol building. This area - formerly prime farmland - was transformed into the city's most fashionable neighborhood.
Like other downtown areas, the East End went into decline with the advent of interstate highways and residents moving to suburban areas. Re-gentrification of the East End began in the 1980s, and, in an unusual move, many of the grand old homes previously divided into apartments were restored as single-family residences. The East End's Washington Street commercial corridor has also experienced a resurgence as is now home to several of the most popular restaurants in town.
The restoration of 28 Bradford Street, begun in the late 1980s, took nearly twenty years to complete. The house is generally regarded as the finest remaining example of Queen Anne residential architecture in Charleston.
Today the East End is a blend of lovingly-restored Victorian and Edwardian homes with occasional examples of Art Deco and more recent residential and commercial architecture. An excellent Walking Tour Guide, published jointly by the Kanawha Valley Historical and Preservation Society, East End Main Street Program, West Virginia State University, and Charleston Convention Bureau, is available to our guests.
